After the controversial end to the clash between Mumbai Indians and Delhi Capitals, WPL has changed the rules regarding zing bails. According to the new rules, the umpires will only deem it out in run-outs and stumpings if the LED bail is fully dislodged.
Appendix D of the current rules for WPL 2025 talks about the bail dislodge. It states, "Where LED wickets are used, the moment at which the wicket has been put down shall be deemed to be the first frame in which the LED lights are illuminated, and subsequent frames show the bail permanently removed from the top of the stumps."
According to ESPNCricinfo, the rule change was prompted by the realisation that the batch of zing bails had been lighting up at the slightest disturbance. The same publication reported that “the bails began to flash even when one spigot was still resting on its groove.”
That’s why the third umpire of that clash, Gayathri Venugopalan, made her final decision on the basis of the new rule change, triggering a debate. While the third umpires were informed about the change before the clash, the two teams - DC and MI - were informed about the decision a day after the match.
