Things spiced up when Virat Kohli brushed shoulders with Australia’s debutant Sam Konstas in the fourth Border-Gavaskar Test in Melbourne. But that didn’t affect Konstas, who starred for Australia with 60 off 65 balls in his debut innings, where he took on India’s pace sensation Jasprit Bumrah.
After the Test, Kohli was punished for the duel with a 20% match fee fine. However, after the match, the duo's conversation was completely different, where Kohli wished the young batter ‘all the best’.
"I had a little chat after the game telling him that I idolise him, and it's obviously a huge honour playing against him," Konstas told News Corp.
"He just had that presence about him...[and] he was very down to earth. A lovely person, just wishing me all the best. I've idolised him from a young age and he's a legend of the game."
The 19-year-old also revealed that Kohli wanted the youngster to do well in Sri Lanka before opening up that the former Indian captain had always been his ‘idol’.
"He was very kind and wished me all the best. He even said he hoped I did well if I got selected for the Sri Lanka series. My whole family loves Virat, and he has been my idol from a young age. He’s truly a legend of the game."
After a good debut series, Konstas will now link up with former Australian opener David Warner for Sydney Thunder in the ongoing edition of the Big Bash League 2025. There’s a good chance that the 19-year-old will be on the plane to Sri Lanka for the two-match Test series later this month.
