South Africa have picked a full-strength side for the upcoming three ODIs against Pakistan, starting on December 17 (Tuesday). Kagiso Rabada, Heinrich Klaasen, David Miller, Keshav Maharaj and Tabraiz Shamsi are back in the side having played their last ODI in 2023. Kwena Maphaka is the only uncapped player in the squad.
The full-strength side is picked to prepare for the Champions Trophy next year. South Africa have these three ODIs and a tri-series in Pakistan, also including New Zealand, right before the Champions Trophy. However, all first-choice players might not be available for them, given the little turnaround time between the conclusion of SA20’s 2025 season and the start of the tri-series.
For Maphaka, it is his first ODI call-up. The left-arm pacer was the highest wicket-taker in the U19 World Cup in January 2024, picking 21 wickets at an average of only 9.7. Since then, he has played in the Indian Premier League (IPL) for Mumbai Indians and was picked by Rajasthan Royals in the mega auction for the 2025 season, a testament to his potential at the highest level. The 18-year-old has played four T20Is for South Africa.
South Africa have four opening options — skipper Temba Bavuma, Tony de Zorzi, Aiden Markram and Ryan Rickelton.
However, the pace-bowling resources are a bit light with each of Anrich Nortje, Lungi Ngidi, Gerald Coetzee, Wiaan Mulder, and Nandre Burger injured. Rabada, Maphaka, Ottneil Baartman, Marco Jansen and Andile Phehlukwayo comprise their pace-bowling resources.
"The bowling line-up features one of the fastest in the game in KG, and this series offers another great opportunity for a young talent like Kwena to come in and learn first-hand from the best," Rob Walter, South Africa's white-ball coach, said.
"In the batting department, we are thrilled to welcome back David and Heinrich, two of the most destructive players in the game. Overall, we are very pleased with this squad,” he added.
