Mumbai Indians (MI) batting coach Kieron Pollard has thrown his weight behind the struggling Rohit Sharma and has backed the MI talisman to roar back to form in style.
Rohit has begun the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 with scores of 13, 8 and 0, but he’s been struggling for a while in the IPL now. The 417-run season in IPL 2024 was Rohit’s first 400-run season in five years, and he has, more often than not, underperformed up top while donning the MI jersey.
But Pollard backed Rohit and asked the public not to judge the former MI captain based on a ‘couple of low scores’.
"I've played alongside Rohit since Under-19 cricket, and he has forged his name and etched his name in history in the record books, in different situations, different formats of the game," Pollard said ahead of MI’s clash against Lucknow Super Giants (LSG).
"He is a legend of the game in his own right and as an individual as well.
"There are times when you have a couple of low scores. He has earned the right as an individual to now enjoy his cricket and not be pressurised in certain situations. So, let's not judge on a couple of low scores.
“In cricket, we know we fail more than we succeed, and I'm sure we'll be singing his praises when he gives us that big score, and then we'll be on to the next hot topic."
In the clash against Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR), which MI won by eight wickets, Rohit was an impact sub, substituted in towards the end of KKR’s innings. Meanwhile, in the clash against Chennai Super Kings (CSK) at Chepauk, he was subbed out after the first innings, replaced by debutant Vignesh Puthur.
Across his last 10 IPL innings, Rohit has amassed just 141 runs at an average of 14.1
