Delhi’s Harshit Rana is in line to make his international debut as team India have added the 22-year-old to the squad for the third Test against New Zealand in Mumbai, starting November 1 (Friday).
Last week, Rana was named in team India’s 18-man squad for the Border-Gavaskar Trophy in Australia. He was a part of the reserves for each of the first two Tests against the Kiwis, but the hosts not encountering injuries meant that Rana’s services were not required.
The 22-year-old has now been drafted in on the back of an impressive showing in the Ranji Trophy for Delhi against Assam, where he picked seven wickets the ball (match figures of 7/141) and, on top of that, scored a 59 with the bat, batting at No.8.
Should he make his debut, it’ll be the end of a relatively long wait for Rana, who was part of the white-ball squads for the series against both Zimbabwe and Bangladesh but did not play a single game.
Rana's uncapped status, however, could work in favour of his Indian Premier League (IPL) franchise, Kolkata Knight Riders, which has the option of retaining him as an uncapped player for as low as INR 4 crore. Rana getting capped in the Mumbai Test won’t affect KKR either, as the retention deadline is a day prior to the Test, October 31 (Thursday).
