We are 28 games into the 2024/25 edition of the Big Bash League (BBL) and it’s been a season filled with accidents. In the very first game of the season, we had Melbourne Stars’ Hilton Cartwright suffer a nasty neck injury.
And then, last week, in the clash between Perth Scorchers and Sydney Thunder, there was a horror collision involving Cameron Bancroft and Daniel Sams which led to the temporary suspension of the match. Bancroft ended up breaking both his nose and shoulder as a result of the collision.
However, the clash today (January 11) between Melbourne Stars and Sydney Sixers at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) witnessed arguably the most bizarre accident of the season, with a seagull getting severely hurt.
The incident occurred on the fifth ball of the 10th over of the chase. Sixers batter James Vince drilled a full delivery from Joel Paris towards long-on, and it raced to the fence as the right-hander collected four runs.
Except there was a slight complication. The powerful lofted hit from Vince landed straight on a seagull, which got severely hurt by the impact.
As the bird lay motionless after being visibly hurt, the batter Vince looked in horror, guilty of having hurt the bird though it was a complete accident.
The temporary emotional jolt, though, did not stop Vince from bringing up yet another BBL fifty. As it turned out, however, it was the Melbourne Stars who ended up triumphing by 16 runs.
